Iron Horse kicks up for charities big and small
Jeff Garvey, chairman of his cancer-fighting charity, bought a home in Durango earlier this year, joining Dennis Cavner as the second LIVESTRONG Foundation board member to live part-time in Durango. The LIVESTRONG Foundation has set up a special fund with the Community Foundation Serving Southwest Colorado this year to benefit local cancer survivors. The fund will receive half of the LIVESTRONG  Foundation’s net proceeds raised from the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic. Iron Horse Director Gaige Sippy anticipated the LIVESTRONG Foundation could raise about $50,000 for local cancer-fighting efforts.

Woman's fight against cancer adds meaning to Mother's Day
Hearing the words “you have cancer” was a life altering experience. Hearing it twice was devastating. For anyone, a cancer diagnosis is difficult to bear. For me, as an actress and singer, the effects of my diagnosis were amplified as I began questioning whether I would be able to continue my career. As a woman, it made me fearful that I would never realize one of my biggest dreams – and that of many women – becoming a mom. I knew that if I let fear take over, the cancer would win. So, I turned to the LIVESTRONG Foundation to help me cope with the emotional, physical and practical challenges that come with being diagnosed with cancer. The Foundation connected me with its Spanish-language cancer support services for survivors, which offer free, confidential, one-on-one assistance online and by phone to anyone with or affected by cancer.

Over 760 Runners Turn Out for Summit Area YMCA Mother's Day 5K
Rain and clouds gave way to bright sunshine on Sunday morning as over 760 runners came out for the Summit Area YMCA Mother's Day 5K, held this year at the Connell corporate park in Berkeley Heights.  The Connell company was the lead sponsor of the race this year. The day was full of families running together and honoring all mothers.  All money raised will be used to support the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Program, a free 12-week program for all cancer survivors.

Shelby LIVESTRONG rally hoping to reach big goal

A single cancer diagnosis doesn't just affect the person with the disease, a fact that LIVESTRONG Foundation CEO and President Doug Ulman knows all too well. Ulman is a three-time cancer survivor and globally recognized cancer advocate. After overcoming chondrosarcoma during his sophomore year of college, Ulman and his family founded the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting young adults and their families and friends affected by cancer. Ulman has beat malignant melanoma twice since that first bout with cancer.

Summer program to help families affected by cancer

On April 15, the LIVESTRONG Foundation officially announced that it will provide funding for Case Western Reserve University and 11 other campuses to hold Camp Kesem in the summer of 2014. Each college campus across the United States will be awarded $10,000 to plan and implement Camp Kesem. Camp Kesem is a free weeklong, student-run, sleep-away camp targeted to serve kids ages six to 16 whose parents have (or have had) cancer by providing them with support and attention in a fun but cancer-conscious environment. Since its beginning in Stanford University, Camp Kesem has grown to 41 camps in 24 states that serve more than 2,000 children each year. This year, the camp will be expanding to 12 additional campuses.

Grant for UConn Health Center Palliative Care

Women’s world hockey championship: Canada tops U.S. in shootout
Canada fought back from a two-goal deficit and overcame the loss of captain Hayley Wickenheiser to beat the United States 3-2 in a shootout to open the women’s world hockey championship Tuesday. Jennifer Wakefield scored the eventual shootout winner before goaltender Shannon Szabados stopped Hilary Knight in the fourth round...Canada wore black and yellow LIVESTRONG jerseys for their first game to promote a Nike line of apparel that raises money for the LIVESTRONG Foundation. The Canadians will be back in red and white Wednesday when they face Switzerland in another Group A game.

YMCA offers free gym program for cancer survivors
Lifting three-pound weights for 15 or more reps is quite an accomplishment for Ruthann Dahlquist. She's just finished a battle with breast cancer that metastasized to her brain. YMCA locations in the Tampa Bay area are offering cancer survivors like Ruthann a 12-week program that is free.  Survivors can work with a trainer who will be sensitive to whatever medical issues they might have.

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Survivorship Program and its directors, K. Scott Baker, M.D. and Karen Syrjala, Ph.D., have been selected to lead a nationwide study that aims to improve long-term health outcomes for cancer survivors between the ages of 18 and 39. Under way this spring, the study will involve the LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center of Excellence Network, a collaborative research group of seven National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers, including the Fred Hutchinson/University of Washington Cancer Consortium.

Report addresses Central Texas' #1 killer
Cancer is the number one cause of death in Central Texas and a top health concern for residents in the area. To that end, several health organizations and the LIVESTRONG Foundation commissioned a report to find out the best ways to reverse that trend. Central Texas has good, quality cancer care, but an immense opportunity to be innovative in its cancer services and to provide better access to those services. Q-C cancer survivor to share her story at national event
It was a chilly March morning, and Hammond-Henry Hospital home health care nurse Sandy Ben-Nun was readying to leave the Two Rivers YMCA in Moline clad in brightly-colored scrubs, a white skull cap covering her bald head. The 45-year-old Colona woman has been in for the fight of her life since she was diagnosed with breast cancer last November. Since then, she has had a double mastectomy and currently is undergoing chemotherapy. She said she has her good days and her bad.

Taking a Swing at Cancer

Cancer affects individuals on a daily basis. According to the American Cancer Society, more than one million people in the United States get cancer each year. In 2006, Saint Rose lost an integral member of the school community, head baseball coach Bob Bellizzi, to an almost decade long battle with leukemia.  Now, almost seven years later, his son Michael Bellizzi has undergone and won his own battle with cancer and is continuing to fight back for other individuals struggling as well. Michael Bellizzi ran in the Mar. 17, 2013, New York City Half Marathon. He trained with a small group of friends for about 6 months.

Report: 12 percent leave Austin for cancer care
After a breast cancer diagnosis in 2004, Elna Vanderwerf of Austin went eight years without a recurrence. But a year ago, she noticed she had trouble moving her eyes from side to side. The cancer was back, but this time it was in the lining of her brain. Vanderwerf, now 63, saw doctors in Austin before traveling to the world-famous University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. There, she learned she could get the treatment she needed in Austin from Dr. Morris Groves, the city’s first neuro-oncologist. A report being released Friday by the Livestrong Foundation, Central Health and the Shivers Cancer Foundation says that despite a perception that travel elsewhere might lead to better care, Austin area providers do a good job of caring for cancer patients. But there are gaps in the Austin area, which the report defines as Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop and Caldwell counties. Some cancer treatment services aren’t available, such as bone marrow transplants, and people who lack health insurance have a harder time getting care and surviving, says the report by Health Resources in Action, a Boston consulting firm.

SXSW: LIVESTRONG Foundation on Crisis Communications
One of the best hidden gems of SXSW Interactive this year was an inspirational presentation on crisis communications from the CEO of the LIVESTRONG Foundation, Doug Ulman. On the fourth floor of the convention center in a huge room that wasn’t nearly full enough, he spoke about the challenges the foundation is facing due to the doping allegations – and later admittance – against Lance Armstrong, the foundation’s founder. Although the scandal has been going on for several years, Ulman focused on the critical turning point of Armstrong’s recent interview with Oprah where he publicly admitted taking performance enhancing drugs. Ulman and his team had only six days’ notice before the interview to prepare for what they knew would be an onslaught.

I Love LIVESTRONG... and So Should You
Now that some of the frenzy over Lance Armstrong's recent admissions has died down, I thought it might be a good time for me to weigh in. You see, I hold a title as a "LIVESTRONG Global Envoy" (really, it's on their website, and everything). As such, I am asked to use my paltry celebrity, and limited influence, to spread awareness of the LIVESTRONG Foundation's programs. It's become clear to me in recent weeks that I have not done a very good job. I am tired to the bone of the baseless and uninformed criticisms people continue to hurl toward the LIVESTRONG Foundation, based on crimes Lance committed as a cyclist.

Brain cancer patient wins Gusher Marathon

A man racing against time crossed the finish line. His daughter, snugly sitting in a stroller he had been pushing for just over 26 miles, gained a memory that may live longer than her father. "This is supposed to eat away at my memory in the end," Iram Leon said of the cancer in his left temporal lobe. "But I hope this memory is one of the last things to go and one she never loses." Leon is 32 years old. He said his doctors have told him, "we're probably not going to beat this. We're just hoping to get you to 40." As Leon and his 6-year-old daughter Kiana finished first in the 2013 Gusher Marathon, he was sure to clarify to everybody that his daughter came in first and he came in second.

Riding for a Cure: Craddock bicycles against cancer

Bicycling enthusiast and cancer survivor Billy Craddock will be in the loop once again. After sitting out of the 2012 event, the Assistant Chief of the Sulphur Police Department is set to participate in his third 24 Hours of Booty bicycling fundraiser Oct. 5-6 in Atlanta, Georgia. The event is named for the 'Booty Loop,' a biking and walking path around Queen's College in Charlotte, North Carolina, where, in 2002, Spencer Leuders, an attorney, chose to make a difference in the battle against cancer. He chose this area as the venue for his charity ride, covering over 300 miles within a 24 hour period. The event is now put on in four cities – Charlotte, Indianapolis, Columbia and Atlanta - by the LIVESTRONG Foundation.

A team for hope
Alisha Hammond said there is a version of her before Dec. 4, 2010, and a version of herself after Dec. 4, 2010. That life-altering day is what prompted the Emporian to become one of 218 leaders worldwide in the LIVESTRONG Foundation and start Team Hope in Emporia, a group of people who have committed to raising cancer awareness in their community and helping individuals affected by cancer. It was on that day late in 2010 when Hammond’s father lost his three-year-long battle with skin and blood cancer.

Bonhomme, along with fellow 2010 Olympic champions Gillian Apps, Meghan Agosta and Jayna Hefford this week unveiled the Livestrong Team Canada jersey to kick off a “Fight With Us” campaign involving corporate partners Nike and Sport Chek. Bonhomme, a 27-year-old defenceman from Sudbury, Ont., is an ambassador to the Livestrong Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to uniting, inspiring and empowering people affected by cancer. The Canadian team will wear the black and yellow jersey and uniform colours when it starts the eight-day tournament April 2.

Alumni from St. Edward’s University have banded together to form the largest and highest fundraising team  for the LIVESTRONG Austin Marathon and Half Marathon in support of 26-year-old cancer survivor and alumna Kate Voth. The team broke records of team size with 119 runners, as well as fundraising, and raised a total of $53,000.

Life Changing

There are so many adjectives that are appropriate to describe my first marathon. From “transcendent” to “painful”, the marathon was an experience across the entire spectrum of human emotion. Admittedly, that sounds hyperbolic and slightly self-aggrandizing, but that doesn’t make them inaccurate. Besides, if you really want to know how the marathon was, I’m going to leapfrog hyperbole and go straight to excessively pretentious. “Life-changing.”

However, racing isn’t the only cause that revs Ryan Hunter-Reay’s engine! Hunter-Reay’s victory at the 2012 Milwaukee IndyFest was a highlight of the young racer’s career, but it was not the highlight of the Father’s Day weekend. When Hunter-Reay thinks about the new addition to his clan, he says he can’t help but think about the person who is not there. Hunter-Reay’s mother was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer in 2008. Hunter-Reay’s mother passed away in 2009. Since then, Hunter-Reay has become a LIVESTRONG Foundation ambassador.

Jenna Benn used to wonder how to bring it up. There seemed to be no right way to tell a guy that she had beaten cancer, but might never be able to have kids. Oncologists call it the double whammy. No Excuse Not to Live Strong
The year I turned 16 was pretty busy. I got my braces off. I got my driver’s license. I got cancer. Compared to most, I had an easy ride through cancer. I had four months of chemotherapy (really, only eight actual days of treatment) plus one month of radiation. I didn’t let cancer interrupt my life. The drugs made me nauseous when I thought about my favorite pizza, but I forced it down (and it never came back up). I caved to cravings like a pregnant woman – I hated mayonnaise before chemo. I only missed one day of school because of sickness. I wore a baseball cap to prom. And by senior year of high school, I beat it.

The Advocacy of LIVESTRONG Foundation should Go On
Though Lance Armstrong may have been guilty of doping in certain cycling competitions, it can’t be denied that his foundation called as the LIVESTRONG Foundation has helped so many cancer patients in the United States and from other parts of the world. The advocacy of such a foundation is now much bigger than the doping scandal that Lance Armstrong is currently facing, so to speak. Lance Armstrong is himself a cancer survivor and the LIVESTRONG Foundation has certainly inspired and helped many cancer patients in the US and all over the world to recover and be cancer survivors themselves. The LIVESTRONG Foundation has somehow become a guiding light and a strong support group for cancer patients from all over the world. It’s only proper that the advocacy of such group and the group itself would go on to help the cancer patients of this planet. The foundation has a noble cause to pursue. The foundation should go on!

LIVESTRONG launches transportation program
If you or a loved one has fought cancer, you know about the challenges. There are the medical bills, the missed work, and sometimes, the inability to drive. Cancer patients to get free rides thanks to LIVESTRONG Foundation
Hundreds of cancer patients may soon be able to get to and from their medical appointments thanks to a new transportation program started by the LIVESTRONG Foundation. The LIVESTRONG Transportation Program will take Travis County cancer patients who register, to and from their medical appointments. The program is volunteer-based. YMCA program helps cancer survivors rebuild strength, endurance and self-esteem
YMCA wellness instructor Angie Brandt stood next to a chair, gripped the back of it with her right hand and stepped forward with her left foot, bending her leg it at the knee. With much less ease, Jim Breneman, 59, of North York mirrored her movement. Brandt was showing Breneman how to relieve the tightness he feels in his muscles - an effect from battling cancer. Breneman is one of 11 cancer survivors participating in the YMCA of York County's new program, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA. The 12-week program at the York branch aims to help survivors - anyone who has or has had cancer - rebuild physical and emotional strength. It also provides survivors and their families with free memberships.

LIVESTRONG program helps cancer patients
Stephanie Angelo has only one regret about participating in the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program. “I wish I’d found it the day I was diagnosed,” said Angelo, who learned she had breast cancer on Dec. 5, 2011. She finished the first 12-week session of the LIVESTRONG program offered at the Marshall Family Y in Evans on Nov. 29. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a program for people who have been diagnosed with cancer and are at any stage of treatment, recovery or remission. It was introduced as a pilot program at the North Augusta branch of the Family Y last year.

How the Marathon Saved My Life
My name is Michael Cates. I am a father, husband, son, friend and cancer survivor. I am currently training to run with Team LIVESTRONG in the 2013 LIVESTRONG Austin Marathon. The 2012 run helped provide me with the ammo I needed to be that much more capable to handle my war on cancer. I am running again because I want to save the lives of others and give them hope that they, too, can win this fight. I run so that my two beautiful daughters will have a father. I run to keep the cancer from returning. But if it does return, I run to ensure that I am in the best shape possible to fight again. My advice to you: Have hope in the unknown and live STRONG.

Macon Cancer Patients Create Pictures of Hope

The Medical Center of Central Georgia doesn't just use traditional medicines to  treat their cancer patients. An artist visits the infusion lab twice a week, to help patients create pictures of hope during their chemotherapy. It's part of the Artist-in-Residence program funded by a $10,000 grant from the LIVESTRONG Foundation.

It also gives anyone a direct chance to get involved in funding this research through use of the “crowdfunding” model that has taken the startup world by storm. Naveen writes “as some involved in the fight against cancer know all too well, one of the most complicated crossroads in the journey is the clinical trials process”. At the recent MAGI Clinical Research Conference in San Diego, it was reported that of the 50,000 clinical trials that took place in the U.S. in 2009, 80 percent were delayed by at least a month due to low enrollment”.

Former Flower Mound residents biking to Alaska for cancer research

It’s going to be hot, cold, wet, dry and hilly. But two former local students are willing to endure all 4,000 miles of it to help find a cure for cancer. Jay Shah, who attended Marcus High School from 2006-2008 before transferring to the Texas Academy of Math and Science, and Caroline Suh, who graduated from Flower Mound High School in 2010, are part of the 2013 LIVESTRONG Texas 4000 team, a group of about 75 University of Texas students that bikes from Austin to Anchorage, Alaska to raise money for cancer research. This is the organization’s 10th year to make the trek, and different students go each year. The group leaves Austin on June 1 and arrives in Anchorage on Aug. 10. But riders are already training and trying to raise money.

With one-tenth of a mile left in her half marathon in May, Cecilia Thomas broke down into tears, the enormity of what she was about to accomplish overcoming her. Nine months earlier Thomas, 56, had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She then had surgery to remove the cancerous cells.Thomas is one of five cancer survivors taking part in the 12-week LIVESTRONG program at the Summit Y. The free training program is offered to all cancer survivors, in any stage of the disease.

LiveStrong officials announced today that they have extended their partnership with the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon until 2020.

It bore the word LIVESTRONG, and it launched a cause-awareness campaign that has been copied, emulated, praised, mocked and commercialized in the years since Nike and the Lance Armstrong Foundation produced the first 5 million yellow bracelets in 2004. They sold for $1 each to raise money for cancer survivors.
Now, 80 million wristbands and80 million dollars later, it has become an example of what foundation president Doug Ulman calls "the democratization of philanthropy."

United Arts applied for a grant to LIVESTRONG to bring the creative process to patients at MD Anderson Cancer Center. The Creative Center Artist-In-Residence Program was made possible through a cooperative agreement with LIVESTRONG. This is the inaugural year and I arranged to sketch Andrea Canny as she brought art to patients. I met Katie Dagenais in the lobby and she arranged for patients to sign releases before leaving me with Andrea. Joan Dougherty was the patient we visited with. Joan sat in the tiny room with her friend waiting to get her chemo therapy. Andrea explained all the art supplies she had on her cart and Joan quickly decided she would do a collage on a mat for Nina, her grandchild.

Tom Whiteside is in the best shape of his life and it’s all because of cancer, he says. Four years ago Whiteside was battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
